The sight of campus police, who imposed the ban, sparked an outcry from Elon University alumni, faculty, staff and students who called for an end to the institution`s participation in the mutual aid agreement with the Sheriff`s Office and Graham Police. The mutual aid agreement was put to the test this summer following the EUPD`s response to several requests for assistance at the Graham Confederate Monument. The city of Graham limited protests to the Confederate monument, but a court has since banned preventing protesters from gathering at the monument. “It`s necessary to have additional manpower when events bring thousands of people to campus because I don`t know of any university departments that could deal with it on their own,” Tellefsen said. “I understand the public`s concerns, but the fact is that it is our duty to protect the community,” said Mr. Blackwelder. In response to the controversy, Whittington appointed the Academic Council to work with him, Dotson and the university`s legal counsel to review “the existing mutual aid agreement and current best practices for campus law enforcement authorities in cooperation with outside agencies.” About the University and the Community: Founded in 1889, Elon University has maintained its core values consistent throughout its history: close working relationships between teachers and students, a culture that supports ongoing innovation, and a strong sense of community.
